Following successful parent and child Family Workshops (commissioned by Wirral Lifelong Learning Service) GROW-Wellbeing was asked to undertake a full academic year programme of weekly Forest School sessions for all year groups at Park Primary. The collaboration was co-designed, with Park Primary senior management team and GROW-Wellbeing, developing an approach that would provide children at the school with real forest school engagement, supporting confidence building, social and emotional development, and mindfulness. Practical activities like fire lighting, shelter building and handling tools each bring their own risks but the forest school approach enables the children to understand and manage the risks in a beneficial way that helps develop confidence, resilience and of course skills development.
GROW-Wellbeing offered the school advice leadership team about the development of the natural environment that was designated as the Forest School site, introducing other specialist services to the school who could facilitate its development, including Mersey Forest (Trees 4 learning), a horticulturalist and an expert living willow installer.
